So tired….

Published October 31, 2011 by Sara

of having to explain to people just how busy I am. I know I work from home, which I think people instantly get the idea that my schedule can be open for anything. I wish, I really wish it did. But it’s more so for my kids and their field trips or any events with the school.

At times I wish I had a job outside the home, being as the minute I walk out the door, my work is done. and maybe by moving my work space, I may be able to accomplish just that. But I think people do not realize what all is involved with running your own business. I need to order my own supplies, if a supplier discontinues something I use be it labels, beads, jewelry boxes, etc then I need to find another supplier and that is no easy feat.

But while my stores on are vacation. I need to get some much needed things done before my stores reopen. One of which is moving my office upstairs. Which this has been coming for a long time, me needing a space strictly for business.

As much as I absolutely LOVE being around my kids and husband, it’s just when we get visitors and I am trying to work and they just want to hang around my table asking me 5 bazillion questions like a little kid or it unnerving to have someone touching things that are drying. Most people ask first, but then there have been some that just pick up without asking.

Also, with moving my office/work table I can have A LOT more stuff that can be drying/curing without worry of my kids or someone else knocking it over.

But while I am on vacation, which I wish it was that. I am planning to catch up all these loose ends. I have my sewing machine out and have curtains to make for Julia’s room, mend some clothes, fix my valances for the sun room, sleep pants for the kids, their slippers I didn’t get to finish last year and lastly, the newer items I picked up to make some presents for them for Christmas.

I need to take the swimming pool down. Which that is not going to be fun. I should have never let Art get the steel frame pool. Being as it can not be up all year round. And even more so when they just predicted on the news for this to be a nasty winter. Oh joy!

But I need to get all of this done quickly, being as Black Friday is just around the corner and this is where I save up $$ to shop on that day. WHICH I am thinking I may just do online shopping this year. I am not to thrilled to hear Target is opening at midnight this year and these stores are driving me bonkers!

Finally…

Published October 30, 2011 by Sara

Over one holiday and three more to go. But what a sense of relief to be almost done with Halloween. This year was by far the biggest feat in making costumes and to top it off to be sick as well. I am into week #3 of hacking my lungs out, BUT I am getting better, but in small steps.

But the making of the costumes. Yikes! For one I needed to put all my stores on vacation being as the orders were becoming too much. And with having so many different styles of Jem earrings, I screwed up some orders. SO, before my stores reopen, I plan to change the titles and also the custom selection to make this easier on me.

So my stores went on vacation, which was the easiest transition I have EVER had. But of course it didn’t stop from the last minute people emailing me. Two of which that irked me to no end. One she emailed me back in Sept about my items and that she was interested in ordering. I emailed her when my stores opened and that was the end of it. BUT now my store on Etsy is on vacation again, she’s asking about my items. She can wait. This is just ridiculous! But I still have some special orders floating out there, so I took my store off vacation and deactivated my listings, this way I can still fill special orders. And the other one, last week she emailed me about having problems with her credit card, told her it was fine, just as long as I knew what was going on, but didn’t realize she had not purchased anything. Well the store closed and now she’s upset she can’t buy them. *argh*

BUT I have learned a HUGE lesson after my last vacation, I will NEVER take special orders. It just defeats the purpose. I plan on kicking ass this whole week and getting some things done. Being as when my stores reopen, I want to be smooth sailing. Doens’t help I still need to list my light switch plates, but when and if I do, if they do sell. I am going to have to eliminate some other made to order listings or really bulk up on some of those items.

To which Gwen is my newly hired employee. At first I was going to pay her based on piece work, but since she is learning and gaining speed, I plan to pay her a little more, otherwise, she won’t make so much by piece work. And I plan to have her open her very first checking account, which scares me….but she needs to start at some point.

Now onto the costumes. Talk about waiting till last minute. (BUT didn’t help I have been having days of just sheer sleepiness, which I contribute to being sick and working 20 hour days last week – I’m not kidding and here’s a pic to show I actually fell asleep at Culver’s…lmao. Right before I conked out I said to my kids, I wish I wasn’t so tired….and this is why you should NOT buy your kids cell phones that have the ability to take pictures.)

BUT I was thankful for those 5 minutes. It gave me enough energy to run for another 3 hours before calling it a night.

Ok, I sidetracked there for a moment, but I had to share this. It’s just too damn funny. Last year I would get so tired I would literally fall asleep at the computer desk. Either with my head on the desk or sitting straight up. My husband would wake me up and tell me to go to bed. Ok, back to the costumes….

Julia’s I didn’t get done till the night before the Halloween parade and my stupid ass didn’t thread the bobbin right, so all these issues I kept having with my sewing machine. I was thinking it might need to be serviced. Did not realize till I started working on Emily’s costume, which was last night. BUT overall, Julia’s costume was a hit.

I refused to let her take it to school, being as the head was so delicate, let alone the head piece is rather large. I was worried it would get crushed by another student and her costume would be ruined. Now if we already had trick or treat, I wouldn’t have thought twice about it.

But the minute she put it on, all her friends surrounded her and was in awe that she was Sackboy from Little Big Planet.

I know, the head could be narrower at the top. And I was worrying about every detail, but when it comes down to it. My daughter is not looking for perfection and when she saw her costume for the first time, she loved it to no end. Plus considering the others I had seen online that others had made, just quite didn’t look right. I truly do think mine is the best I have seen yet, despite the imperfections. AND I normally don’t take that much pride in my work, honestly.

Then Emily’s. She wanted to be Pikachu. I honestly worried how in the world would I pull this off. Originally I thought I was going to make her a face mask, but when we saw this one costume being sold online that had Pikachu’s face on a hat, Emily liked that idea. So I rolled with it.

NOW I had thought Julia’s was going to be the hardest of the two, I was sooooo wrong. It actually ended up being Emily’s. I had started on it last night and once I figured out the bobbin. (which I do not know how in the world I had forgotten about lining the thread into the metal sleeve. I have been sewing things since I was 12 years old…..but I guess we all have those off moments that make us scratch our head later. LOL) I started about 8pm, finished up about 3-4am. Started again around 11am and I did not finish until 4pm. I forgot about the tail and the stupid ears when I was working the night before.

I still had to work on my costume. *argh* My apron didn’t come in the mail till yesterday, but I already had everything else. So once I was finally done with Emily’s. I made the template for my apron and my badges. I was planning on being Flo from the Progressive commercials, which I gotta admit, my costume was pulled off fabulously!

Gwen couldn’t decide what she wanted to be until the DAY before, but she already had some costume props in her closet. So she just threw something together.

Here is a group photo :

And while this is all going on. I was watching my nephew Chance, since we had planned to take him trick or treating with us. He is an absolute riot to watch and I just can not believe how much his mannerisms are exactly like my nephew Branden when he was that age. I think Gwen and Emily get the biggest kick of having him around. But sadly, he did not get to go with us, since he crashed out a few minutes before we were set to leave. So I asked my husband if he would be ok watching him, being as I was worried with him sleeping, I didn’t want him to get cold while laying down. (I was looking forward to having a stroller too, which is so awesome to have while out there braving those cold temps. Which thank GOD for Cuddle Duds, those are by far the BEST invention for thermal underwear which doesn’t even look like it.)

I know tomorrow we have our neighborhood trick or treat. But I am just releived I get to stay home and not have to walk around. I forgot to do my inhalers before leaving, so anytime I came across someone having a fire pit going just sent me into coughing fits. I really thought I was going to die, goodness everyone in my group was worried if I was ok. I really hate this. I hate having allergies, I hate having asthma, which takes me 3 times longer to get over bronchitis of a normal person.

But I am just so relaxed, I have been working on laundry, which needs to be caught up in a bad way. I need to pull out our winter clothes. To which I picked up new totes to have for summer clothes. This way I don’t have to wait for the winter clothes to be taken out before I start putting away summer.

I am all about simplicity at the moment.

And my tenant is moving in a few days. To which we don’t plan to rent it out since Gwen will be 18 soon and she would love to move up there, but she doesn’t get to have it ALL by herself, being as I am moving my work table and such up there. I need a room dedicated to business and this way I can keep more inventory on hand and not always have to be made to order. Also, I will get to claim the deduction if I am using my rental space for business and deduct what I would collect in rent on my taxes. NOT too sure how that works, but I am all about deductions that is for sure! We won’t have the kids forever to claim on our taxes and need to find out now the deductions, being as our tax returns won’t be so nice when they are all grown. (Which I about cried when I realized this is the last year I shop for Gwen for school clothes and supplies. Well unless she goes to college, which right now, that is undecided)

Goodness, can you tell I needed to blog? It feels like it’s been ions and I have thought about this everyday, but had no clue as to what to say, being as my mind was too much into the mindset of orders and any time wasted on this when I could be working on orders, just is not in my work ethic. (I swear I am a slave driver to myself….)

Halloweenie

Today I finally made a trip out to Joann’s and without even thinking about it, being as I was there to collect items for a special order. I decided to take a peek at the fabrics they have for the costumes my kids would like me to make them for Trick or Treat.

Julia has opted to be Sackboy from Little Big Planet. After looking through several types of fabric. I found the absolute perfect fabric that was a remnant, to only find out it’s been red tagged and they will no longer carry it. *sigh* I nabbed it up anyway, being as I would hate to NOT buy it, go to the other Joann’s and find another remnant that would complete it. BUT they may even have a whole spool left!! Will be making a trip to Cudahy and Brookfield Square and pray that either one has this material I need.

Then Emily would like to be Pikachu. Well, after a little bit of thought. I decided we could make her pj’s, the long one piece kind. The ones they sell for toddlers, but make one her size. Which she is just tickled pink with, being as she wants to wear this as reg pj’s when it’s over. I have no problem with. She even mentioned something about a hoodie cover, which could be the face, but I am not too sure about that. But we’ll see.

I have already known for months who I want to be. Flo from Progressive. (Funny, that is our car insurance as well) My best bud Liz loves the idea. Plus, how many people are going to dress up as her?? Now watch, there will be others…..

Holiday Rush

Published October 6, 2011 by Sara

I can already feel the pinch of the orders that are coming in. To think, 3 years ago, I only sold on Ebay, to which I started selling on Etsy last year and now this year I have added Artfire and Bonanza to the mix.

I am just getting over a cold and am starting to see some headway with my orders! Hooray!

I also found out while getting shipping labels printed that eBay allows me to print and PAY for International labels, which this means I will be able to expedite my orders out MUCH faster! No more waiting in long lines at the post office, which won’t start till November, but that can be quite the pain in the tushy if you ask me.

I always made a point to drop off my packages in the morning to beat the rush, but sometimes, that would not always be the case.

Also, I won’t have to explain to postal workers the difference between the labels I use for International. Which just recently, I got some nazi woman who was telling me the form is wrong. ?? I explained to her that I have been doing this for 2 years and not once has anyone had a problem with it, but she tries to tell me, use the shipping label on one side and then print the addresses on the other side. ??? I honestly do not know what the accomplishes when someone else may not be able to decipher my handwriting. It just seems like in the end it’s making more work for me.

Anyway, now I don’t even have to worry about that anymore, being as they all can be dropped off at the mailbox.

I’ll miss the people I did make friends with on my stops there. 😦

Sickness

Published October 3, 2011 by Sara

Ugh, it started yesterday with my asthma, which now a cold has developed. *sigh* Before it used to be cold, THEN asthma would kick in. Either way, I just hate it.

I think I may have found a way to use my inhaler that produces the best effect. Normally I take 2 puffs into my aero chamber and breath that in. WELL, last night I screwed up and did one puff. Then waited a few minutes, did 2 puffs. It was purely magical.

This morning, I attempt my normal dosage 2 puffs, and I could not hold the medicine in my lungs. I have no idea what happens, but it hurts my chest beyond belief and try as I might to hold it in for 10 seconds just can’t happen. BUT always the second dose, I can hold it.

Well, now I think I will start out with one puff, hold it, then time to do my second treatment, THEN that will be 2 puffs. I just hate the jittery feeling that comes with it. But I’m knocking this crap out fast, being as the longer the asthma sticks around, the worse the gunky crap sticks around afterwards.

I do have to say, when this happens. I am SO grateful I work from home. I plan to finish out the orders that need to go out today and then attempt a nap. If I end up being out of commission for the rest of the day, contact my buyers to explain. That’s the part I hate. It’s not like a job outside the home, one phone call and you’re done.

And for business talk, I was looking around at my sales for the week. Which normally, I never follow to well. But my jaw dropped when I calculated the total between the 4 stores. This is by far the highest paying job I have had to date. And I love the journey I have been on with this. To think this all started with just making Jem earrings and to see how far I have blossomed since then, is amazing in itself! And the best part of it all, is the jobs I get commissioned for. Right now, I am making cufflinks for a wedding. Another one is earrings from Sailor Moon, being as someone wants to dress up as the character, then another order is Max Headroom earrings and lastly Cheese Wedge earrings, she wants this to be rather large….

And I think this will be my last post on tumblr, being as as much as I like this format. It’s just seems like there are too many accounts out there that are not real accounts. My business one will stay, being as I do seem to reach a decent audience with that anyway. 🙂

Holy Savings!!

Did some little shopping yesterday and got some KILLER deals! Three 45 oz. bottles of Arm & Hammer laundry soap and one 55 oz powder for $2, Free Travel Size Colgate Optic White, $2 Wall-E Vitamins, .50 cents Skintimates Shaving Cream, $1.99 Schick Quattro Razor with 4 refills, another one @ 3.99. Helll Yeahh!! (Adam Sandler in Chuck and Larry) LOL

But I know I was missing some coupons and I was frustrated trying to look through my binder, which is on it’s way to being organized. Well, when I finally got the family fed. I sat down and organized the last of my loose coupons, used tab markers to seperate the sections to make it easier to find. I even have sections for each store, being as I will get coupons for them and this way it makes it easier to see at a glance, versus thumbing through them. I was up till 7am finishing this.

I picked up the paper today and HOLY Grail of coupons! There were FIVE inserts and I nabbed up 4 papers. So I am taking a break from organizing for a bit. But wow, if I had not organized this earlier, I would have been overwhelmed today.

I’m still only picking up the best deals or ones that have coupons that expire. I was fortunate for the kids vitamins. The coupon expired next week and I checked to see if they were on sale and they were!! How cool is that? BUT damn it! I went through the Red Plum that came in on Weds and there was another coupon, which I had a Target coupon that expires this week that I can stack with, but I would prefer to done this when it was on sale. (This is WHY as soon as I get any sort of coupons, they should be filed immediately! LOL)

But the upside is, it’s done. It’s just more or less putting the new coupons away in the category. 😉
